A blank board can be overwhelming. It helps to have a goal OTHER than "attack and win pieces." That's mid and end game stuff. Opening is all about gaining positional advantages. 

So make sure every move your make is focused on attacking center squares (even if there's no one on them). You want to OWN those squares, either by being on them, or being one move away from being on them. Focus on that and you'll enter mid game with a greater number of opportunities.
