This Week's Club Events
4:45 p.m. Kid's Night
Suited for K-12 players who are new or rated under 1000, we offer a rated tournament with a medal to the winner, an unrated tournament for new players with a USCF membership to the winner, and free casual play.
Kid's Night Registration
7 p.m.: Rapid Quad Night! G/20+5. Quads place you in a group of four players as closely rated to you as possible, with three rounds to determine the winner. $20 Entry fee can win $40 ($45 for a perfect score). You must be registered by 6:40 p.m. to participate, so don't wait until it's too late!
Quad Night Registration
6 p.m. until: Cheers and Chess! A casual meetup of club at Hazelwood Brewing Company at the Old Mill in Lexington, SC! Open to all skills levels. We love playing blitz and rapid as well as teaching newcomers the game. No registration needed.

Columbia Chess Club's Foundations Chess Camps Open for Registration!

Foundations Chess Camp is designed for students just starting out in chess, or those with limited knowledge beyond the basics. Camp sizes are limited to 12 students, so please act quickly if you are interested in attending.

For:
  • Complete beginners
  • Students who have only played chess at home
  • Students who have not competed in a formal tournament
  • Students with limited tournament experience (have played in US Chess in-person tournament but have a rating under 600)
  • Children between the ages of 5-12
Instruction

The Chess Foundations camp is taught by Coach Brandon Jordan and other Columbia Chess Club coaches, with a class size limited to 12 students. The goal is to learn the rules, basic strategy, and beginner tactics and compete in a tournament setting.

Kid's Night: Kids Night was a huge success with over 30 young players filling the club with energy and excitement! Congratulations to our medalists:

Rapid Quad Night: Another exciting Action Quad Night at the Columbia Chess Club! Congratulations to our winners:
♟️ Aaryav Saha – Won the top quad ($40) and crossed 1800!
♟️ Chace Nguyen – Won the middle quad ($45) and crossed 1600!
♟️ Rio Saha – Won the bottom super quad ($65)!
A special thank you to David Williams for making the trip from Spartanburg with his wife, Evelyn, to compete and generously donate books from the collection of the late Professor Spencer Matthews. Your support means a lot to our club!
 
Quad Night Rating Report
Thursday Main Meeting: 10 teams battled it out in our Hand & Brain event! NM Mike Sailer & NM Kevin Contreau edged out the competition for 1st place, while Nicholas Cirello & Dylan Wong, Sean Miller & James Brandmair, and Jared Hagerty & his brother shared 2nd & 3rd.

In 
the classical round, rising star Thomas Kemp Sr. pulled off a 300-point upset! Great games, great energy—see you at the next event!
 
Online Diamond Arena 8:
Congratulations to the top 3 winners of our weekly online Diamond Arena--they will be receiving 1-month free diamond membership! Diamond arenas are held every Sunday at 7:30 p.m. on chess.com. The 1-month diamond membership
 can be used to upgrade your free account or extend an existing diamond membership for a month. The link to next Sunday's arena is on our calendar.
Aaryav Saha Wins the 1800 Box!
Sean Miller's "1800 box" project involved club members of all stripes putting money, trinkets, coupons for free sandwiches, and other goodies into a box that could only be opened by a person at the club that crosses 1800. On quad night last week, Aaryav Saha did just that, with a rating of 1802! Congratulations to Aaryav! The box has now passed to him to set a new goal for the club, we'll see what he comes up with...
Fine Designs to Sell 2025 Scholastic Merch at Convention Center
T-shirts will be on sale at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center for the 2025 SC Scholastic Chess Championship - so if you forget to wear a shirt that day, we've got you covered. Literally!
Corny Jokes from the SCCA Archives
From 1984 to 1999, the South Carolina Chess Association included corny chess jokes in its official newsletter. We repeat their mistake by including them here. From 1985 SCCA News, Vol. 20, No. 4.
