Kid's Night: We had 20 eager competitors at the Columbia Chess Club!
Tristen Burgess earned a US Chess membership in the Unrated Section.
Larry Feng won the B Section medal on blitz tiebreaks over Jackson Tucker.
Jared Hagerty clinched the A Section medal on tiebreaks against Vivaan Biswal.

Thursday Main Meeting: We had 24 players battle it out in April’s Blitz Tournament at the Columbia Chess Club! Sean Miller took clear 1st with a perfect 4/4. William Hickman Morton
(1864–1950)
1926 South Carolina Chess Champion

|
| Dr. William Hickman Morton became the first South Carolina Chess Champion, winning the inaugural championship on July 26, 1926, held at the Y.M.C.A. in Columbia, SC, where he was also elected the first president of the newly founded South Carolina Chess Association (SCCA). A Spartanburg resident and academic, Morton served as a professor of physics and astronomy at Converse College for 35 years, having studied at Central University in Kentucky, the University of Chicago, and Columbia University. He received an honorary doctorate from Presbyterian College in 1920 and was a respected elder in Spartanburg’s First Presbyterian Church. Morton’s 1926 victory and leadership role established him as a foundational figure in South Carolina chess history. He passed away on February 18, 1950, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. |

Columbia Chess Club's Foundations Chess Camps Open for Registration!

Foundations Chess Camp is designed for students just starting out in chess, or those with limited knowledge beyond the basics. Camp sizes are limited to 12 students, so please act quickly if you are interested in attending.
For:
- Complete beginners
- Students who have only played chess at home
- Students who have not competed in a formal tournament
- Students with limited tournament experience (have played in US Chess in-person tournament but have a rating under 600)
- Children between the ages of 5-12
Instruction
The Chess Foundations camp is taught by Coach Brandon Jordan and other Columbia Chess Club coaches, with a class size limited to 12 students. The goal is to learn the rules, basic strategy, and beginner tactics and compete in a tournament setting.
