COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS 2023 : SEPTEMBER ROUND UP
County Championship 2023 Open Division 3
Derbyshire as expected have secured the Divisional title with TFS the runners-up. Our total of 12 points was a great return (won 6, lost 2). It’s the fine margins that usually settle final league positions: our two losses were by a single point. The third and final promotion place still to be decided between Hertfordshire or Cambridgeshire, the latter still have two matches to complete.

County Championship Under 1600 Rating 2023 Division 2
TFS is well placed in the promotion race to join Division 1 for the 2024 season. It’s likely to be a close contest with any of the top 5 teams in with a shout at securing one of the two promotion spots. TFS currently have a won 2 lost 1 record with 3 matches in play. Of these victory over Somerset Wyvern looks almost assured, TFS has a 15-9 lead (16 boards); the Channel Islands match will go to the wire, a 10-9 lead (11 boards); early days in the Sussex match but we have a useful lead of 4-0 (9 boards). The final round against current league leaders Hertfordshire starts on 28th September and we will need our strongest roster for what might be the promotion decider Link to register: https://www.chess.com/club/matches/hertfordshire-county-chess/1532161

County Championship Under 1300 Rating 2023 Division 5
A disappointing season to date; TFS currently prop up the Division with a won 1, drawn 1, lost 3, record. The tie with Kent Checkmates is currently all square at 5-5 (6 boards). The final round match pitches us against second placed Lincolnshire, that looks as if it will be a ‘doubles match’ with only 2 on the roster. At least it focuses the mind on getting a win and ensuring we don’t finish bottom of the pile!
