Poachers have killed nearly half of Mozambiques elephants for their ivory in the past five years.A Mozambique survey showed a decline in elephant numbers from just over 20,000 to an estimated 10,300.This decline is due to rampant poaching in the countrys most inportant elephant populations. The figures can be explained by the arrival of poachers from Tanzania, where the elephant population has been decimated. An estimated470,000 elephants remain in Africa, down from several million a century ago according to a count by Elephants Without Borders.
