Franmazy Wins Down Under Invite <1200 15/10!!!

Argentina’s Franmazy went into the 5th and final round of the Down Under Invite tonight with a perfect 4-win streak.

Having defeated some great players such as AdrianCodifica (who out-ranked Franmazy by over 100 points), in the 2nd round, and gordonfrimann in the 3rd round. He went into the fourth round against another undefeated person at that point, the solid playing, knight-loving Camilla_Lee_Honeytrap (whom this tournament was actually created for, as they requested one, and they’re from Australia)…. Fran defeated Camilla in that 4th round after an end-game pawn blunder by Camilla that forced a resignation (and subsequent withdrawal from the tournament).

Watching this final game of the 4th round, we then knew Franmazy was the only undefeated player to go into the 5th and final round. So, who would be matched up against him?

Me.

We played strongly through the opening moves, but on move #14, he forked my King and Rook with his Bishop, and created a decided edge in the game.  On move #19, I forced his Knight out off to the edge of the board, and got the edge back in my favor. After a few trades, Franmazy regained the edge in the game, but I was holding firm with some pressure on his King with my Queen. On move #27, when faced with a Queen trade, and being down material, I moved my Queen to safety. HOWEVER, Fran decided to take the pawn in front of my Queen and put me in check anyway to take advantage of me not trading Queens. HOWEVER, what they didn’t realize is that my BISHOP was protecting that ‘lil pawn his Queen just took and I took his Queen. BOOM! Huge advantage in my favor now! I was able to checkmate him on move #34 with a Queen/Rook combo in the corner. WHEW! What a game!

So, we both ended up with a 4/5 record and I kept him from going undefeated. However, Franmazy won the tie-breaker and took home the Gold!

I settled for the Silver medal and silvermoon2000 (1003 rating) won the tie-breaker against the highly rated AdrianCodifica (1183, who at one point in the tournament went up over a 1200 rating), who got the Bronze medal!
