Dear Variant Fans,

We invite you to the next in the Chess.com Community Championship series: the Chess.com King of the Hill Championship, which will take place from May 6 to May 8 and features a $2,500 prize fund.

King of the Hill is one of Chess.com's oldest and most beloved variants. It is very similar to regular chess, with one difference: Players can win by "climbing the hill" with their king, taking it to the center of the board. Check out the rules here.

If a player reaches any of the highlighted squares with their king, they win the game.

As always, the event will have two stages:

Qualifiers on May 6 and 7:

  • There are a total of eight qualifiers: four on both days between 9 a.m. ET and 3:30 p.m. ET
  • Each qualifier is a 75-minute arena
  • Time control: 3+0
  • The winner of each arena qualifies for the Final
  • Players who have already qualified for the Final cannot play in subsequent qualifiers

Any member of the Chess.com community can join. You can check the full qualifier schedule and click the "Join" button to participate. We may require participants to join a fair-play video call. Players who join the call must set up two cameras in the room, each at a different angle. Players who refuse to comply will be removed from the event.

Knockout Final on May 8:

  • Double-elimination knockout
  • Time control: 3+0
  • Each match consists of four games
  • If the match ends in a tie, players contest 3+0 games until there's a winner.
