Dear Silverdale Chess Club Players, Friends and Families

Happy Summer Solstice, the first day of Summer!
It’s around halftime for the Silverdale Chess Club's 2025 Summer Round Robin Tournament as we make the pairings for Round 5, or 6, depending on where you are on the crosstable.
Here’s a bit of tournament chess trivia for you —in case you're interested (and have lofty chess aspirations).
To achieve a FIDE IM or GM “norm,” one qualifying leg of the marathon to becoming an International Master or International Grandmaster of Chess, a tournament must meet the following requirements:
A minimum of 9 games is required for a norm, and the norm seeker must achieve a performance rating of at least 2600 for a GM norm and 2450 for an IM norm.
Additionally, a significant portion of the opponents must hold FIDE titles, and the opponents' average rating must also be above a certain threshold.
While our event does not meet that criteria, the requirements are something to keep in mind as you climb the chess ladder of success.
To recap:

FIDE Rating:

The tournament must be FIDE-rated, meaning it must be registered with FIDE and follow their regulations.
• Minimum Games:
A minimum of 9 games is required for a norm, and a minimum of 27 games are required for the three norms needed for the title, according to Wikipedia.
• Minimum Players:
For a norm to be valid, a tournament must have a minimum number of players, often 10, with at least 50% holding FIDE titles.
• Opponent Titles:
For a GM norm, at least 1/3 (with a minimum of 3) of the opponents must be Grandmasters. For an IM norm, at least 1/3 (with a minimum of 3) of the opponents must be International Masters or Grandmasters.
• Opponent Rating:
The average rating of the opponents must be at least 2380 for a GM norm and 2230 for an IM norm, according to FIDE.
• Foreign Players:
A FIDE-rated tournament for norms requires a certain number of foreign players from different federations.
2. Performance Requirements:

Performance Rating:
The player's performance rating in the tournament must meet or exceed 2600 for a GM norm and 2450 for an IM norm.
• Rating Performance:
The norm seeker's rating performance must meet the specific threshold for the desired title, according to Remote Chess Academy.
3. Other Important Considerations:

•   FIDE Arbiter: A licensed FIDE arbiter is required to oversee the tournament and ensure compliance with FIDE regulations, according to the US Chess Federation.
• The tournament must be registered with FIDE.
• The Chief Arbiter must prepare and sign a certificate of title results, which is then sent to FIDE.
So there you have it.  Perhaps a Silverdale Invitational will be part of the not too distant future.
