Do you want to learn how to play the beautiful art of chess? Then read this article and find out the amazing game of chess!

Pawns

Pawns are like the foot soldiers of war. They also move very interestingly. The pawn is the only piece in chess that can't move backward. They move one up always, unless it is their first move, then they can move up two squares.

Pawns can only capture diagonally. If a piece is in front of a pawn then the pawn cannot capture it. You may be wondering, "If pawns can't move backwards, then what happens when they make it to the other side of the board?" Well, then something special happens to the pawn, it gets a promotion! It can either become a queen, a rook, a knight, or a bishop. It cannot stay a pawn. Let's see an example of a pawn promotion.
Now that you know all about pawns, let's meet more pieces.
Bishops
Bishops, unlike pawns, can go backward and forward, right from the beginning of the game! Bishops move diagonally and as far as they want. You start the game with two bishops, one on a dark square, one on a light square. Bishops will never change the color of their square (i.e. bishops that started on a black square will stay on a black square and vice versa) this means they will never get in the way of the other bishop. They make a pretty good team happy.png They capture the same way as they move. Let us see a game with some bishops.
Knights

Knights have an interesting move shape. The move in letter L shapes. The knight is also the only piece in the game that can jump over other pieces. Let's look at some knight moves and captures.

In the position above, all the squares with pawns are the squares where the knight can move.

Rooks

Rooks can move horizontally or vertically as far as they want. They cannot jump over other pieces. Rooks have a special move, called castling, which they do with the king. If you want to read more about castling, read this article by chess.com. Let's see some rook moves and captures!

Queen

The queen is the most powerful piece in chess. So take good care of her, you only get one wink.png. She can move in any direction (except L shapes), and as far as she would like. She captures the same way as she moves. Let's look at some queen moves and examples.

The King

The king plays the biggest role in chess. Even though, he most definitely is not the strongest piece, he can only move one square in any direction. He moves the same way as he captures. If the king is in check (check means that the king is in danger of being captured) then the king has to move. Checkmate, is when the king is in danger and he has no where else to go, and the game is over. Let's look at checks,  king captures, and king moves! =D

This is the end of this article! Have fun grin.png and keep on playing chess! happy.png
