What is International Chess Day?

On July 20, 1924, FIDE (Fédération Internationale des Échecs or the World Chess Federation) was founded in the eighth summer Olympic games.

July 20 has been celebrated as International Chess Day since 1966, when it was officially recognized by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). Chess players and clubs around the world organize events on this day to share their appreciation for our beloved game.

FIDE's motto is Gens una sumus: We are one people.
