League Information!

As many of you might know, we are currently participating in various leagues, for various clubs. This post will hopefully clear up some confusion regarding leagues.

The Basics

The purpose of leagues is to create a fun, competitive way of playing either vote chess or club matches. For our club, only the details regarding vote chess will be of importance.

Put simply, a league is basically a tournament between clubs on chess.com. There are a few different types of leagues, just like there are multiple different types of tournaments. There are knockout tournaments and swiss tournaments. Knockout tournaments are where each club is pitted against another club(either playing 1 game or 2 games), and the winner of the match moves on to the next round, while the other club is eliminated. Swiss leagues are just like swiss tournaments: there is a group of clubs playing together, and each club will play 1 game against every other club. So if the group of clubs competing involves 8 different clubs, then each club will play 7 games(one game against every club, excluding themselves).

The Specifics

Currently we are playing in leagues which were created and organized by 3 different clubs. Therefore, each club will have its own specific rules and format. I will attempt to provide a quick briefing of each one, and also some links to explain more in detail.

Knockout Vote Chess League

The games in this league follow the knockout format. Each club plays 2 games(one as white, one as black) against the other club. The club with the most points at the end of the 2 game match advances to the next round, while the other club is eliminated. If there is a tie, then one team will be selected randomly to advance to the next round. We are currently participating in S18 and S19

1 World League

The 1 World League follows the swiss format for their leagues. Each club is put in a group with 8 other clubs. Those clubs proceed to play one game against each other club. A new game starts every 2 weeks(the 7th game starts over 3 months after the 1st game). Sadly, they generally only have one competition every year(most of their attention is focused on daily match leagues). We are participating currently in the 2021/22 Vote Chess Championship

Sadly, since the club is focused mainly on daily matches, I can't really provide a link to more detailed rules. However, the information above should cover the most important issues.

Club Wars

Club Wars is also follows the knockout format. However, there are a couple key differences. Firstly, in the tournament, the first round will not knock out anybody. It is simply a round to determine who is better on tiebreaks. To elaborate, if there is ever a tie, but one club happened to win the tiebreaker first game, then they will be the club to advance. Also, there is only one game played at a time. We are currently participating in the Club Wars 2021 Vote Chess Championship

I hope this post was helpful and informative! I created it since many of you were asking about the leagues and how they work and our standings. Clicking on some of the links will take you to forums showing the pairings and standings.
