For the tactic to work in your favor, we need to place our pieces in the best possible squares. This may seem very complex, but it is extremely simple! Let's try to apply this concept in practice:

This is a game played between Lipschuetz x Showalter in 1895, for the American championship. The position comes from a Petroff, and Black has sacrificed a pawn on initiative. But apparently there is nothing immediate, so Black needs to improve his piece position. What is our worst play? Showalter improved his position with a simple move:

1...Bd6! Placing the Bishop on a more active diagonal, and freeing up a diagonal for the Queen. Finding a good move has never been easier!

Obviously it's a simple example, but notice how asking the right question can help you find a good move. And to be able to ask the right questions at the right times, players need to do something more than the famous "Quick Scan": Checks, Captures and Threats.
