Danny Boy is a coming-of-age novel about alienation, heartbreak, brokenness, forgiveness, and redeeming love. ​​​​The unpredictable ways the lives of the main characters intertwine portray different aspects of love and show how God uses broken people and heals them through the power of prayer and unconditional love. The central character is Danny, a boy brought up in the safety and security of one of Scotland’s many glens who becomes alienated from his father and twin brother after losing his mother at thirteen. On his eighteenth birthday, he takes his inheritance and leaves home, seeking to create a new life for himself on his own fun-loving terms. Through the luck of the Irish, he hopes to double his inheritance and marry beautiful seventeen-year-old Molly whom he had met in the local tavern. Devastating circumstances radically alter his life course after he cries out to God and meets sixteen-year-old Mary, a novice nun. The steadfast love and prayers of his father, assisted by Molly, Mary, a prince, and some others, turns Danny around. Through an unimaginable journey, Danny finds wholeness and his place in the world of men.

Danny Boy, inspired by the song “Danny Boy” and the Parable of the Prodigal Son, takes place in Eighteenth-Century Scotland. The challenges portrayed in the story and how they were confronted are just as relevant today as they were then.
