This game was played March 20th, 1804. Thirty-five year old Napoleon Bonaparte twenty-four year old Madame de Remusat sat down at Malmaison Castle to play a game of chess.

The picture shown is a painting of Napoleon and Remusat at Malmaison.

"To determine the truth about Napoleon's play is, unfortunately, impossible: We have no game left to us that we can attribute to him with certainty. The following game [Napoleon - Remusat 1804] indicates a lively if unconventional style - much too unsound, however, to be serviceable on a battlefield. Bringing out both knights on the first two moves displays a certain impetuosity that, had it been apparent at Waterloo, might have saved Wellington a great deal of trouble." - Horowitz, All About Chess, 1958.
