October 2019 Blog of the Month: Alexey Spectre Unearths A Chess Story
Our October blog of the month is something special, and it's winner has long been deserving.
Alexey Spectre (@Spektrowski) regularly translates incredible chess articles, interviews, and stories from Russian in his blog. His latest translation, "The Death of Chess," is a sci-fi novella about a chess automaton. The story was published way back in 1926.
Translation is it's own art as simple, direct translation rarely captures the vibrancy of the original language. Translators must be fluent in both languages, AND be a strong writer in the new language. I give you this excerpt as a testament to the vibrancy of Alexey's translation.
"There’s a lot of noise in the lobby. Sweaty cheeks and bald spots are blotted by handkerchiefs. Wet, disheveled hairdos. Gesticulations. Words exchanged at the speed of a machine gun. And amazement, endless amazement."
