Officialities and Champions

Now, Miss Sheffield is our official  Teacher-Sponsor! I can and have chosen to start a competition for a title in the school: The School Chess Champion, which is to be declared in May. This will be outside of the Live Tournaments, to keep maximum flexibility.

Here's how it works:

  1. Send a challenge to a member of GCCC
  2. Play the game
  3. e-mail the game's details to runescape9212@gmail.com  (Players, who was challenged, moves, result)
  4. Wash, rinse, repeat

I will be using a spreadsheet to record the results of every challenge, whomever sent the challenge to whom AND the moves of which should be emailed to runescape9212@gmail.com (you can copy and paste them) to be recorded. This is to keep from false positives being recorded, such as early timeouts. When you challenge someone, use only one game per person at a time, okay? Challenging the whole group is fine IF you intend on actually playing those games to the end.

The ranking is determined by the individual's Win-Total ratio. Unfortunately, draws do not count (on the spreadsheet) as I have not found a way to use them and keep the calculation working as well as I've achieved so far with the wins and losses. May be changed in future years.

One thing that will not be tolerated is the better players picking on the lower-skilled players in order to increase your win-total ratio. Be honorable, for it is more fun to have resistance against your victory than to win outright. Also, to the lower rated players: It's A-OK to have a higher rated rival (I personally have such a rival to use as a measuring stick of my progress), but don't over do it and ruin yourself in the process. The players should decide whether the game is to be casual (not recorded) or competitive.

A tip to all new players: If you feel you have a winning idea, try it! Form and technique only emerge after trial, error, and readjustment. After each game, go back through the game and ask why you or your opponent lost, and how it could have lasted longer. If you can't see anything, play with the pieces! I say this to you because Hindsight is always 20-20.
