With the exception of being in Black and White movies do not get better than this one.  Burl Ives (famous for the Big Country and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof) puts in a solid performance as a World War I German veteran, and the Hanava police chief Ernie Kovacs (who died young in a Hollywood traffic accident or would have become a far better know actor) plays his sleezy but smooth part to perfection.
