The Bell X-5 was the first operational aircraft capable of rotating its wings to change their sweep. This technology allowed to efficiency and speed to specific missions and paved the way for such prolific aircraft to be developed as the F-111, F-14, and B-1B. The wing, when fully extended, is best for lower speeds while fully swept back is ideal for supersonic and transonic speeds. The technology used in the X-5 marked a significant milestone in aircraft technology.
