Plane of the Day: Convair XFY-1 Pogo
The Convair XFY-1 Pogo is a rather interesting, delta-winged aircraft that had a small fuselage and two vertical stabilizers. Designed by Convair for the US Navy as a proof-of-concept aircraft (similar to the Avrocar), it had short/vertical takeoff and landing capabilities and ship-takeoff capabilities. It was designed to takeoff straight upwards, and featured contra-rotating three-bladed propellers. Unfortunately, due to tedious landing and lack of interest in propeller-driven aircraft, the project was scrapped after a few test flights. Even so, it continues to leave a legacy due to its unusual shape and capabilities.
