SELFRIDGES has banned the sale of plastic water bottles in its food hall and restaurants as part of its campange to help clean up the worlds oceans. The pledge from the oxford street store means that from yesterday water will be on sale in "Tetra Pak"style card containers. It will also stock a range of re-usable water containers.Selfridges had previously been selling around four hundrad thousound plastic bottles a year. The store has teamed up with the london Zological society, which runs London Zoo to highlight the threat to fish stocks.Enviromentalists estimate there will be one kilo-gram of plastic for every three of fish in the oceans within a decade. There are now thought to be five trillion pieces of plastic in the sea.Professor Johnathon Ballie, director of conservation programs at zsl said"No matter where plastic litter originates, once it reaches the oceansit becomes a global problem as it is carried by ocean currents."The good news is that marine litter is a problem that can be solved as most plastic entering the ocean comes from single use items like plastic water bottles.
