This chess problem was composed by Vladimir Nabokov in Montreux, Switzerland, March 22, 1965, and published in The Trinity Review, Cambridge, England, 1969.

As a picture for this article I chose a photo of a chess tournament at Trinity College in Cambridge held in 1950.

Nabokov comments on his own problem: "The key deceptively prevents the set mate B x Pe4 after P to f4. The interest of this problem lies in the three main variations with the B advancing one spasmodic step every time."

Mate in 2 moves. Мат в два хода.
