This is for all you prohibitionists out there who think you have a say over an individual's personal rights and choices.
My dear friend Andrew is dying. He is like a brother to my husband, so it's been tough. A young man at only 40, he went to the hospital 4 months ago with stomach pain. He left with a stage IV colon cancer diagnosis, which had already metastasized to his pancreas, stomach, and lungs.
He could no longer eat or sleep, until a few days ago he called in the middle of the night terribly upset by incredible pain and hunger. I wrapped up a bag of cannabis and told my husband to take it to him.
Now, I am not in denial, and realize as the tears now stream down my face as I type this, that Andrew is leaving us soon. And those loving big brown doughy eyes will be closed forever.
But the difference just a small amount of cannabis made for him is nothing short of a miracle. He is now sleeping because of a decrease in pain, and he finally has an appetite, which has given him a complete new energy and is helping him become less sick after chemotherapy. To see his appreciation for what we are doing for him was nothing less than beautiful.
My question is, why do stray dogs and cats get more humane treatment than a human in indescribable misery near the end of his life?
Are we really going to continue this society where alcohol and tobacco are legal, but a simple herb my friend needs to ease his dying is treated criminally?
How long are we going to criminalize normal people who believe no one has the right to tell them what they can and cannot do with their own body? *cough, pro-lifers, cough*
Have you ever stopped to the think of the amount of tragedies cause by alcohol and tobacco?
It's so appalling, and it's all about money. Another knife in the gut...
PLEASE people I beg you to stop living in such a black and white world!
If you also live in Texas and share my feelings please never stop mailing our representatives about this ridiculous issue. If some states are coming around, we can make this national!
This is a link to Andrew's GoFundMe page, where we are trying hard to raise funds for our dear friend and brother to help with chemo costs.
Thank you so much for reading this friends!

UPDATE: Andrew passed in April '16. Thank you from the the bottom of my heart to those of you who donated. The money was used to help funeral costs and to help make the end of his life as comfortable as possible. Bless all of you. -Jess
