This week's puzzles are slightly harder (the Very Hard puzzle disappoints in difficulty, however). There is even a positional puzzle. The first puzzle is relatively easy, while the second is a test for Easy puzzle players; harder than normal it is. The Normal puzzle is contributed by EternalHope and demands a positional eye. The Hard and Very Hard puzzles are checkmate puzzles and submitted by dinklylad. There is also a new puzzle aim introduced in the fifth puzzle, Aim: Draw. Find the stalemate!

PUZZLES FOR WEEK 17:

Very Easy

Aim: Material advantage

Easy
Aim: Material advantage
Normal
Aim: Material advantage
This one is submitted by our Super Admin, EternalHope. The interesting thing about this puzzle is that this position occured in a team match of ours. Here, the so called "material advantage" is naught but a pawn, and the real aim is positional advantage, where Black's pieces gain outposts and White's Queenside pawn structurewill bear the brunt of attacks in the near future. Of course, Black, for the pawn, compensates for lack of development. The move is highly a positional one and requires one positional eye instead of two tactical eyes.

Hard
This puzzle, submitted by dinkylad, has Black's pieces all geared up for attack. But White's pieces prove formidable enough to fight the attack off. However, White sees light at the end of the tunnel. If you can spot the checkmate, you should have no problem playing reliable combinations when you play a game of chess.

Very Hard

Aim: Draw

We now explore the endgame, where technique is needed terribly. Again, this is a puzzle submitted by dinkylad. Black's Rook isn't sufficient to provide a win for him; but neither does he succumb to White's Bishop and would-be Queens. Black cleverly maneuvers his way into stalemate, something White never could've imagined would happen to him in the first place. Play with skill!

Have fun!
