Quiet Domination: Strong Squares
Dear Chess Friends!
We often think of chess in terms of tactics, material, and immediate threats. But some of the most decisive games are won through quiet domination — by seizing a single square that becomes the heart of your position.
In our next workshop, we’ll explore the art of strong squares — how they’re created, how to spot them, and how to use them as a long-term strategic weapon.
What is a “strong square”? It’s a point on the board that can’t be touched by an enemy pawn, which means your piece, often a knight, can settle in undisturbed. From there, it can block pawn breaks, limit opposing pieces, and even support a devastating attack. But getting a piece to a strong square isn’t just luck. It involves planning, patience, and knowing how to provoke weaknesses.
