Raymond Keene - Robatsch Defense
For anyone wishing to explore chess openings, seeking a new opening or looking for a new defense, the Modern Defense or Robatch Defense is ideal. It can be played versus 1. e4 or 1. d4 or 1.c4 or 1. f4 or even 1. Nf3 or 1. b3. It can also be played with the White pieces in a Reversed Modern Defense format.

He wrote the Batsford book The Modern Defense, and was a leading exponent of it with Black in tournament play. The combinations are simpler and easier to spot than with many more complicated openings. The Defense is solid, and I prefer it to the Pirc Defense with the Black Knight on f6 (although he played both). The link is to the games he won with the defense.
