The Statehood Day Open and Scholastic attracted 38 players who competed in three sections:  K-12/Open (merged), K-8 and K-5/K-2 (merged).

In the Open section Quguang Wang took clear first place with 3.5 points out of four.  He fought 4th-grader Echae Kim to a draw in the final round.  Echae tied for second with 7th-grader Austin Uezu at 3-1.   Quguang took first in the Open, Prince Lei Bumanglag took second, and new tournament player Tysen Oyama finished third.   Echae won the K-12 first place trophy, Austin took second, and new tournament player Juna Kazim finished third.

Ty Chen Dutoit won clear first place among the sixteen players in the K-8 section with a final score of 4-0.   Aven Kim and Kuliaikapona Shirota-Kapalu tied for 2nd and 3rd place with a score of 3-1.  New tournament player Raphael Bulahan played extremely well, losing only to Ty and drawing Kulia to finish with 2.5 points and a provisional rating of 1041.

In the K-5/K-2 combined section, top-ranked Aaron Uezu made it to 4-0 without any problems and is now rated over 900.  Jasper Watanabe-Hiromasa took the second-place trophy with 3-1.  Tiago Lum tied with new tournament player Jaymen Li for third place with 2.5 points.  Apollo Van Brunt and Anson Li tied for first in K-2 with 1.5 points each.

18 players stayed after the main tournament to enjoy friendly blitz (5/2) games in smaller sections of closely-matched players.  Echae Kim won the top section, and his blitz rating is now over 1500!  Ty Chen Dutoit and Adrian Ma both finished 6-1 in the 8-player middle section to tie for first.  Logan Gibo finished first in the third section with six points, just ahead of Tysen Oyama and Diego Chang who had 5.5 and 5 respectively.

This was a fun warm-up event for the Hawaii Open which happens on Labor Day Weekend (September 2-4) at the Hawaii Convention Center.  It will be a big and beautiful tournament, and there will be close games and nice prizes for everyone.  Please see the link below for more details.
