On board four, we saw Hank Costner play Anthony Rhodes! Some worry grew as Hank played 1. e4 to an open seat across from him. Luckily, we did see Anthony, newcomer to the game, run in with 15-20 minutes left on his clock to play his best with the time remaining. Unfortunately, this wasn't enough as Hank was able to put away his opponent with the nearly 10 minutes of additional time.
We then had Anthony Thompson play Stephen Broderick on board three. The game was close and well played out. A mistake in middlegame turned the it into a quick endgame, costing Stephen the match.
Board two, we saw Lenden Rhodes play the returning Mario Homer! The game starts off pretty solid with a King's Indian Defense, but slowly starts to fall as Mario is able to pick off pawns for the early advantage. The game continues until a pin on move 17 loses a knight, where a trade off knights was possible with 18. Qc1! This leads to a Rook vs Rook and Minor Piece endgame, and Mario is able to simplify and checkmate his opponent.
Finally, board one saw Andre Herrera, FIDE player out of Mexico, play longtime club member Jason Barton! This was a tough grind of a match up with Andre opening with a Catalan, and was able to keep Jason in a cramped up position. This gave Andre time to build an attack down the center, forcing Jason to trade his Rook for a Knight, allowing White to break through and win on time.
With round two paired up, we hope to we more close match ups. Could we even see a late entrant come in and shake up the standings? More to follow after round two this Friday!
