नमस्ते सर्वेभ्यः ..शुभमध्याह्नम्!अध्य वयं स्त्रिलिन्गशब्दं पठामः (Today we are going to learn about feminine gender words-Strilinga)

These words are feminine in gender.There are two types of स्त्रिलिङ्ग -

1)ईकारान्त स्त्रिलिङ्ग

Eg:- स्त्री-(girl/woman/lady)Streee-Ends with ई(eee)

       नदी -(River) Nadi. -Ends with ई

      लक्ष्मी -(Lakshmi)Ends with ई,etc.

Since all of them end with ई, they are known as ईकारान्त स्त्रिलिङ्ग

2)आकारान्त स्त्रिलिङ्ग

Eg:-वाटिका (Garden)-Vaatikaa Ends with आ(aa)

      बालिका (Girl) -Baalikaa Ends with आ(aa)

      पेटिका (Box) - Petikaa Ends with  आ(aa)

Since all of them end with आ,they are known as आकारान्त स्त्रिलिङ्ग.

बहुवचनं(Plural form):-

1) ईकारान्त स्त्रिलिङ्ग- दूरवाणी (Telephone-)-दूरवाण्य: (Telephones).In ईकारान्त the  ई changes into यः and the consonant is split into half.For example,in भगिनी(sister) ई changes into यः and the consonant(न ) splits in half and the word becomes भगिन्यः (sisters).

2)आकारान्त स्त्रिलिङ्ग-

Example:-मापिका (scale)-मापिकाः (scales).

You add aha to आ(in this case का ).

लेखनी-pen
अङ्खनि-pencil
कर्तरि-scissors.

गायिका-singer
नर्तकी-dancer
महिला-lady
