Section 1 (At Home ways to Reduce your Environmental Impact) - Topic 7 (Eco-Friendly Halloween Candy)

Hello, Save our Beautiful Planet members!

Happy Halloween! I bet you're all excited to go trick - or - treating. What candy are you most excited to get? Hershey's milk chocolate? Milky way? Oh wait... those candies aren't vegan. (To learn more about veganism go to: https://www.chess.com/news/view/section-1-topic-2).

So, what candies are vegan?

Welcome to Section 1, Topic 7 (Eco-Friendly Halloween Candy), where we will explore vegan candy.

For starters, I just want to say, almost all of the candy is milk chocolate. Grab a random candy in your bowl of candies and read the ingredients list: Milk pops up in almost every single one!

So, what are milk free candies that are popular? (I'm not going to list candy brands that no one has ever heard of in this news post).

Now, a lot of the candies I'm researching have a lot of backstory to it, such as if the colors on candy are vegan. Since I know a lot of you want to go onto your trick - or - treating, I will make it brief and only include candies that don't have any controversy, and then I'm list the ones that have some controversy, and you can see which ones you're comfortable eating.

Non-Controversy Vegan Candies:

1. Skittles

Yay! Skittles are on the list. Skittles (according to the research I've been doing) ARE vegan.

That's it. I know! I'm sorry that I couldn't find anything else. Before we look at the next list of vegan candies (this list has more than just skittles!) I want to mention a common trap: gelatin. Gelatin is in gummies and marshmallows and is made out of pigs bones. (I'm sorry. For those who aren't vegan I probably made you loose your appetite for sticky and chewy sweets). Some vegetarians and vegans DO eat gelatin, but it really is the type of vegetarian and vegan you want to be, and it's up to you do decide. Now, onto the next list!

Controversy Vegan Candies:

1. Smarties

Smarties are a very popular candy. It really depends, because two companies make smarties! The Smarties Group does make vegan Smarties (because of the colors and the other ingredients that go into candy), but Nestles doesn't. Who knew the world of candy could be so confusing?

2. Sour Patch Kids

Some ingredients in the Sour Patch kids make it skeptical that it isn't vegan. However, Sour Patch doesn't have gelatin.

In other words, it's up to you. The candies considered 'not vegan' or 'contradictory' do have very little ingredients to make it non-vegan, or you can think that the non-vegan candy adds up. Go with your feelings.
