Section 2 (The Climate Crisis) - Topic 2 (COP26)
Hello, Save our Beautiful Planet members! I wish you happy holidays. 😊Â
This week's news article is about the UN Climate Change Conference 2021 (aka COP26). Those who might know about it probably know it's old news. (Old as in November). However, I wanted to share about what happened in the conference so that readers can know important things that happened with the climate crisis. Though what do I mean by 'important?' There is a lot going on in the world that has to do with climate change. Pick up a newspaper and you'll find countless climate change floods (if you want to know how climate change effects floods go to: https://www.chess.com/news/view/section-2-topic-1). If you want to find out how many floods there are, go to: https://floodlist.com/america/usa. Though this link only shows the USA, you'll find countless floods. Of course, it did flood in the US before cars and other greenhouse gas emitting machines were made, but the flood count was significantly less compared to what it is now.
The first question I want to answer is: What is COP26? According to ihrb.org, COP26 is "the 26th meeting of the Conference of Parties." Is it wrong that by answering your question I produced a new one; "What is the Conference of Parties?" The first thing that I want to say is that I'm sorry that I made you continue wondering, and the second thing I want to say is to answer your question: The Conference of Parties consists of everyone interested with climate change such as governments, businesses, and climate change activists (like Greta Thunberg).
COP26 had many goals about climate change. They mostly revolved around renewable energy, reforestation, not letting the earth warm more than 2.7 Fahrenheit (1.5 Celsius), and having countries invest money into the climate crisis. (Information from: here). According to the the-sun.com, Joe Biden, Greta Thunberg, and Sr. David Attenborough attended, along with countless others. (Information from: here).
I hope that this article got you interested in the COP26! Next article is about the Paris Agreement. I know that it happened a long time ago, but many politicians reference it when talking about climate change. Thanks for reading this article! Oh, and remember to comment on the article. 😊
