The 2023 Triple Digit Preview
The 2023 Triple Digit Tournament begins February 28th at 3:45 pm eastern standard time and this years field of players include 8 chess warriors ready to do battle on the board of 64squares! In order to qualify for this tournament of neophytes and developing players you must have a maximum rating of 999.
1. Terrencethefirst
Chess.com has Terrencethefirst as the odds on favorite to win this tournament. He sports a current rating of 983 and ranks 28th out of 32 in the club! The Yonkersonian first joined the club back on June 16th of 2019. He has never won an LC title in his near four years with the club but he did take a 1 year hiatus from playing chess (which stymied his progress) and he is back now to take his game to the next level beginning with this tournament. Winning this tournament may be a stepping stone to even greater accolades achieved in the club.
2. Jamaldonovan
This Brooklynite hails from the Linden houses in East New York Brooklyn
! He first joined the club on August 28, 2018. He won second place in the 2022 Triple digit tournament last year but was later awarded first place after chess.com booted the Englishmen Scisca from the website for suspected cheating. JamalDonovan will look to repeat as the tournament winner this year and increase his rating into the quadruple digits in order to play in the Let’s Castle major tournaments. This is due to the new rule stating anyone with a rating of 999 and lower will not be permitted to play in the 4 LC major tournaments. (The Happy New Year Tournament Dec 30th, The Let’s CastleChampionship Tournament March 30th, The Independence Day Tournament June 30th, The Shocktober Tournament September 30th). JamalDonovan currently sports a 969 rating and is ranked 29th out of 32. His career record against the favorite Terrencethefirst is 8 wins and 6 losses.
3. Warpathhunter
Another Yonkersonian will participate in the 2023 Triple Digit Tournament. His name is Warpathhunter aka Mr.Mogul. This is something like a rebirth for the Mogul. He is very disappointed in his low rating and he knows he is a much better player than his rating and ranking shows. His rating currently sits at 914 and he is ranked 30th out of 32. He has been with the club since August 11th of 2018. He has never won an LC title in daily format in his near five years with the club. Warpathhunter has vowed that 2023 will be the year that he turns things around. Warpathhunter has taken some criticism from Ydtd
and Juanitamann
who believe he is overrated and not on their level but Warpath Hunter responded with “It used to bother me that Ydtd thought I was not on his level,
not anymore that's the mind game he plays. Now Juanitamann,
my chess game in the last tournament was trash but that's the past. Now I'm doing better and I don't care what anyone says. It’s all about me not about them.” This sounds like a more composed and focused Warpathhunter to say the least. Well If there was ever a venue to begin a u-turn this tournament would be it. Warpathhunter’s career record against the favorite Terrencethefirst is 4 wins, 2 losses and a draw!
4. MylesC73
This newcomer is from the USA. He sports a donkey face for an avatar and his catchphrase is “Am I devious enough for you?” In fact whenever he speaks he usually involves the word “devious”in his sentences similar to the character Groot
from The Guardians of the Galaxy movies. Whenever Groot would talk he would just utter the phrase “I am Groot.” Well that’s what MylesC73 does only he asks “are you devious like me?” In the rare occasions LC reporters have held a microphone in his face
he answers their questions with the question “Are you devious like me?” This is pretty creepy. Needless to say I’m not looking forward to my first interview with him. He joined the club on January 10th of this year which makes him a rookie for this season. So maybe he has a chance to win this years’ Rookie of the year award. Only time will tell. He currently sports a rating of 906 and is unranked in the club so far. He’s never faced Terrencethefirst in his career.
5. Girldadstrength
She hails from the USA and is the daughter to the current club champion Ckmatein427
. She joined the club back on April 27th 2021. She has never won an LC title although she did place second in the 2021 Let’s Castle Spring Women’s Tournament. She currently sports a rating of 836 and is ranked 31st out of 32. She’s never faced Terrencethefirst in her career.
6. SeñorObscure
This man hails from parts unknown I don’t even know if he is human. He is just a silhouette as the name Señor Obscure suggests ! There’s not much to report on other than he loves playing video games on his Xbox, he sports a rating of 794 and is currently unranked. He has never faced Terrencethefirst in his career.
7. Whogotnext19
Another Brooklynite in this tournament is Whogotnext19. She is also the sister-in-law of yours truly. She joined the club back on June 6th of 2019. She currently sports a rating of 721, is currently unranked and her favorite actress is Bette Midler
! Whogotnext19 has faced the favorite Terrencethefirst four times and has suffered defeat in all four games.
8. Stats1203
This Queensite has been with the club since it’s inception April 3, 2014. He comes in with a rating of 530 and is ranked 32nd out of 32. Stats1203 did not really focus on chess in the previous years as he is a very busy man, but he has vowed to take chess more seriously in 2023 and bring his game to the next level! He has never faced Terrencethefirst in his career.
9. BedstuyCp
As you can tell this Rookie hails from the home of the Notorious BIG
bed stuy Brooklyn! He just joined the club on February 8th 2023 so he is brand spanking new! He came to me three weeks ago and asked me if I could teach him chess so his daughter who is taking chess lessons wouldn’t clobber him in a game. So I took him on as a protege and he finally beat me in a game yesterday. I was very proud of him. He’s a fast learner. This also shows he’s also sedulous in his approach to chess. He puts in the work. I think he will be able to hold his own in this tournament and possibly contend with MylesC73
for this year’s Rookie of the year award! His rating is 509 and he is currently unranked in the club. He has never faced Terrencethefirst in his career.
