The Former Archon retires.
Greetings My Dear Fellow Athenians,
How good it is to be among you once again.
Some of you may not know who I am but others may be able to recall me through my weathered face as the Former Archon of this our home land, our great city, New Athens. I have had many treacherous adventures to speak of since I was kidnapped by the evil forces of "real-life" but the telling can wait for now. First we must deal with the most urgent matters.
The City stagnated for a while during my absence but eventually, I am glad to see, that capt_hook and dryan43 have taken it upon themselves to reinvigorate The City since there was no indication of my whereabouts or the possibility of rescue. As far as I am aware, the vote for the new Archon remains open but I am unclear as to when the closing date is. Is that correct? When do I have to vote by?
I have read in the notes somewhere that whosoever is duly elected as the new Archon would rescind their position back to myself should I be able to make safe passage back to New Athens. I believe this to be an error. Archons should serve continuously up to their full twelve month term or until their service is interrupted. There should be no notion of "I'll do it until the boss comes back". The elected Archon should be fully the Archon of New Athens.
I also read that having more than one archon was being considered. I don't know if that is a popular view but if after having elected the main Archon (historically -- the Eponymous Archon) this still seems like an apealing option then I would be happy to advise on it's variations and implementations.
Historically, former archons would become Areopagites and join The Areopagus, a college of former archons. Technically they would have no privileges or powers beyond any other citizen but would discuss present matters and make recommendations to the incumbent Archons and Magistrates. They would also preside over homocide cases but hopefully there wont be many murders to deal with on chess.com.
Honour to New Athens,
-- Areopagite shahhussainkcl.
