Hey guys! As @ranu540 requested, today we are going to talk about how chess originated and the development it went through in becoming the game we all love today.

When was chess invented?

Chess was said to have originated in India two thousand years ago, however, the first known and found in modern-day Scotland. In fact, this used to be Scandinavia, and including the board were known as the walrus ivory collection. Each piece was carved from the teeth of whales, while the board was only made out of wood. And just like the indian army of that era it's pieces are consist of elephants, chariots, cavalry and infantry. It was later combined with the Greek game Petteia a board game which has 64 squares and is played using black and white pebbles. The pebbles were then replaced with one king, one adviser, two elephants, two horses, two chariots, and eight soldiers. The new game now named Chatrang then spread to China, Korea, and Persia, and later on to Europe. Gradually, the pieces and moves changes over the years.

The Elephants were later changed to a tall spire with onion-shaped crown, similar to the tower beside the mosque by the Persians because of religious reasons. When the Europeans saw it, they crown reminded them of the bishop so they called it Bishop.

The Chariots were then changed to something relatable by the Europeans. They changed it to castle or rook.

The Adviser was replaced by the closest adviser of the King. His wife. The Queen.

The Horses became Knights.

The soldiers became pawns.

And did you know that the Queen, the most powerful piece now could only move one square then.

Modern Chess was played since 1641. And the first chess tournament was held in New York City in 1843.

When did the rules of modern chess apply?

According to IM Anna Rudolf, the first known modern game of chess was played during 1400's-1600's, which is also the time when old walrus ivory collections were out of style. As time would go on, the newly changed rules of chess during the 1400's to the 1600's had became permanent, all the way to present-day.
