Chess News: Lev Aronian wins Tata Steel
Levon Aronian wins Tata Steel, overcoming the 2815-rated Magnus Carlsen.
Aronian played with the white pieces against Radjabov, one of his biggest rivals. The game ended fairly quickly in 12 moves. Aronian said, "No, no. I really came to play today. I was prepared for a fight against Radjabov, but when Teimour allowed to repetition of moves, I was glad to take the draw."
Radjabov's 8 points in an unbeaten record of 3 wins and 10 draws was just a point lower than Aronian's 9 1/2.
Then Loek Van Wely playing against 2815-rated Magnus Carlsen cracked up after a draw. The game was practically flying in the air. After Aronian's quick draw, Carlsen accomplished draw in 41 moves. Carlsen said that things got messy after the seventh round.
Caruana vs. Gelfand was hard. Caruana said that it's always nice to win, but this one was drawish once. They could've drawn, but instead, Caruana won.
Gata Kamsky took down strong Veselin Topalov. Topalov mishandled the middle game, leading to a loss.
The three other games-- Gashimov vs. Nakamura, Ivanchuk vs. Karjakin, and Giri vs. Navara were relatively quickly drawn.
