Upcoming Classical Chess Tournament: The Northern Alberta Open
Hello chess players of Red Deer and environs!
As the new year gets underway, I wanted to let you know about an upcoming event of interest to those of us wanting to get into competitive tournament play: the Northern Alberta Open. This is a rated, classical, over-the-board tournament, held over two days at the internationally famous Edmonton Chess Club. The winner qualifies for the prestigious Alberta Closed tournament.
You will need a CFC membership to play. You can either purchase one ahead of time, or simply buy one on site.
WHEN: February 18-19, 2023
WHERE: The Edmonton Chess Club (#204 10840 124 Street, Edmonton, AB)
FORMAT: 5 total games (10am, 2pm, 6pm Feb. 18 and 10am, 2pm Feb. 19); 90 min + 30 sec/move time control; byes allowed with prior notice
ENTRY FEES: $50 if you preregister by Feb. 16; $60 thereafter (DISCOUNTS: Students with valid ID play for only $20!; juniors under 18, all women, and seniors over 65 receive a $15 discount); titled players play for free
PRIZE: Winner qualifies for the Alberta Closed + regains entry fee
