Waterville Chess Club announcements for the week beginning 06/10/2024!
Weekly Chess Announcements
You are cordially invited to free in-person Waterville Chess Club meetings this coming week (rain, snow or shine). There are plenty of options to play when it’s convenient for you! If you prefer, we also offer a free online chess meeting [via lichess.org] on demand.
We have new leadership for the Waterville Chess Club!
Hello Everyone! I am your new Waterville Chess Club president, Jacoby Grotton. I will be running the Waterville Chess Club emails from now on and I will be doing them bi-weekly instead of weekly. I will still give all the relevant dates on meetings in the area as well as meetings for other chess clubs as well.
New Website Coming Soon!
I am working on a brand new website for the Waterville Chess Club. I expect everything to be published 1 - 1.5 months from now so stay tuned!

Wednesday June 12th and June 19th, 2024 in Waterville and Boothbay Harbor, Maine.
We usually meet at the Muskie Community Center on Wednesday afternoons from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm. If you haven’t already attended our meetings, you will need to provide your name, date of birth and phone number for their records. This is a very comfortable space to play chess.

One of us may have extra chess boards and pieces for the in-person events in Oakland and Waterville; every once in a while,
we actually have schedule conflicts so we recommend that you bring your own board and pieces [just in case].
Thursday June 13th and June 20th, 2024 in Farmington, Maine.
The Farmington Chess Club will be meeting at the Farmington Community Center in Farmington on Thursday mornings.

Friday June 14th and June 21st, 2024 in Camden.
For the last couple of years we have only been able to play online at lichess.org [as part of Community Teams: Camden Chess Club] on most Friday nights between 4pm and 5:45 pm. The Camden Chess Club is now playing in person over-the-board chess instead. The Camden Chess Club will meet in person in the Picker Room at the Camden Public Library on Fridays from 4:00-5:30 PM. All levels are welcome! For more information, contact Evan Annis at: camdenchessclub@gmail.com

HOSTED AD HOC ONLINE EVENTS
We also offer online sessions (to supplement those who wish to play in person). I know that many of you prefer to play in-person, but for those who want to play online instead [or in addition to the in-person meetings], we usually play online at lichess.org [as part of Community Teams: Camden Chess Club] but no longer on every Tuesday night; reply to this email if you want to schedule an online game.
You can play online at lichess.org [as part of Community Teams: Camden Chess Club] any time; look for a green dot that indicates that your opponent is online. Check to see if
they are in the middle of a game before issuing a challenge.
CORRESPONDENCE CHESS
I know that some of you are far away or unable to devote a chunk of time to playing interactively. But all is not lost, we have your back. There are several convenient ways to play chess, one move at a time. We have several active correspondence chess players in the club (Glenn Snyder, for example), mostly on Chess.com.
If that’s your cup of tea, respond to this email and we can get you started. We play primarily on Chess.com, but also on lichess.org and ItsYourTurn.com. By using the online websites, there is a record of the game which you can review afterwards. Some of the websites even give you analysis and feedback about your game (which will help you play better in the future). The official USCF rules are not strictly observed in our casual games, but they are a good guideline to keep the games fair and interesting. Cheating is discouraged. If anybody would like to challenge me to an UNRATED correspondence game then send me a challenge at my handle: GM_Katsu on chess.com
Have a great week,
Jacoby
