You say Goodbye and I'll say Hello
12 Months ago, this club was started as a way for the members of the Friday Knights Chess Club, a group of chess players in Memphis to continue to play chess against each other after the Covid pandemic made in person chess events difficult, if not impossible to host
For 12 months we have met every Friday at the same time for a little over an hour of chess. During this time many new faces joined us from all over the United States. This club now boasts well over 200 members, and I hope all of you will remember this last year for all the good things that happened.
However, this club was never meant to last forever. It was designed to be a way to keep going until we could safely gather in person again. And after one year, I am happy to announce that time has arrived.
Friday Knights Chess Club will resume in person chess events beginning Friday June 11th, meeting for the rest of the Summer at different locations in the Memphis area. Those of you who are on our in person email list will get a calendar shortly of events and locations.
The resumption of in person however makes holding regular Friday Tournaments in this club difficult. Most of our attention will need on Friday's to be focused on our in person meetings, and running both at the same time is nearly impossible. However, I don't want to forget those of you who have joined us from other states, and I want there to be still be online events for those of you who are either located too far away from Memphis to join us, or are not yet comfortable resuming in person.
The last Friday event for this club will be our Monthly Arena on Friday June 4th at 7:15pm. In Person activities will resume Friday June 11th at 7:00pm, and Virtual activities will resume on a new day beginning Monday June 14th at 7:15pm. From that point on we will continue to meet in person on Friday and virtually on Monday for the immediate future.
Due to time commitments and my involvement with the in person group and other summer activities, I am looking for anyone who wishes to take a larger role in keeping the virtual club going. Including the ability to create events and advertise as you see fit. I will still try to be around as much as possible, but I simply won't be able to be here every week anymore. If you are interested in taking on a larger role within the virtual club message me on chess.com
This has been one of the strangest years ever, but I want to thank all of you for staying involved in this club as we tried to make things work. This may be a goodbye for some, but also a hello for many as well.
Matt
