David Janowski (May 1868-January 1927) was born in Wolkowysk, Russia, he settled in Paris around 1890 and went professional as a Chess player in 1894. He won tournaments in Monte Carlo 1901, Hanover 1902, and tied for first at Vienna 1902 and Barmen 1905. Janowski was among the world's top twelve best payers at the time. In the words of the late, five times US Open Champion Israel A. Horowitz: "What is amazing about the following game is the rationale of the defense. Black, it appears, has solved all his problems and is about to take the initiative. Out of nowhere, however, comes a "sleeper" which changes the complexion of things".
