A Deep and Beautiful Combination
George Hatfeild Gossip (1841-1907), was the winner of the Correspondence Tournament of the Chess Players Chronicle in 1873-1874. He played the following game during the Sixth American Chess Congress of 1889 in New York. Many believe the game should have been awarded the Best Game Prize, that was not the case. The fact is, the game can't be denied its share of immortality. The final sacrificial combination is nothing less than historic.
In the words of World Champion William Steinitz: "Mr Gossip deserves the highest praise for the ingenuity and depth of combination which he displayed in this game. One of the finest specimens of sacrificing play on record."
