    Hi, this is the first of many Beginners Gone Pro articles I will be submitting. This article covers one of the more well known openings: The Ruy Lopez.

The move sequence is 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

This opening is popular to beginners and grandmasters alike because of the even chances it offers, as well as the logical and complex play that it offers. Usually, Black chooses to castle kingside and begin queenside counterplay, with a6 and b5. Actually, this is the most popular approach, for good reason: castling queenside is almost instant suicide.
