Herman Helms of Brooklyn
Herman Helms (January 1870-January 1963) was recognized by the US Chess Federation as the "Dean of American Chess" in 1943. His personal and over-the-board experiences began with World Champion Wilhelm Steinitz. He encountered, at times successfully, all the super stars of his era, including Lasker, Capablanca, Pillsbury and Marshall. He won the New York State Championship in 1906 and 1925. His play was brilliant and his attacks merciless. Helms was inducted in the US Chess Hall of Fame in 1988. A nice example of his attack can be seen in the following game, where he played Black, he sacrificed one of his Rooks, then his Queen, and won beautifully.
