Importance of Accuracy in Sharp Positions
Here is a game from the XIV International Tournament of Dos Hermanas, GM Shirov - GM Vallejo:
In this game we saw a very sharp battle starting with 5. g4!? all the way to the end of the game. There were many critical points where there were "only move" situations where both sides had to be extemely accurate just to immediately avoid a devastating loss. I think we can point to one particular point where white really went wrong and allowed black to take over. This was move 18. Rxh4 which seems like a natural move but surprisingly the extremely hard to find move 18. Kf2 walking into a discovery is the only move to allow for an equal game. This really shows how critical sharp positions can be. You must be extremely careful when deciding on playing for a sharp game as one second best move can be the end of the game!
