    In most of the intense games that I have played, I was able to develop my pieces well once I was sure my king was safe (at least for the moment.) In these cases I usually used pawns to serve as a shield in various directions. More often than not, my "sanctuary" consisted of only two pawns, but the fact was that my opponent could not assault my king directly. Below is a recent example of such a setup.

 

 
 Notice how black has the material advantage, but is on the defensive. White's king is secure.
