Max Euwe's Immortal Game
The fifth world champion Max Euwe (1901-1981) was a truly interesting man: mathematician, engineer, astronomer and computer specialist. He is the only world champion that was not a professional! But this did not impede him from reaching the chess Olympus. He became World Champion in 1935. Also from 1970 (when he was 69 years old) until 1978, he was president of FIDE. His opponent in this game Savielly Tartakower (1887-1956) was a strong master too, therefore Euwe’s victory has a bigger connotation. Although some chess players would have a preference for another of Euwe’s brilliancy, there are no doubts about the magnitude of this!
