Miracles do Happen
"The thrill that comes once in a lifetime" occurs in chess again and again. A true miracle happened in the game between Alfredo Dutra and E. Echeverry, played during the Uruguayan Championship of 1963. Threatened with immediate checkmate or overwhelming loss of material, White conjures a desperado escape involving the sacrifice of a Knight and a Rook to draw by perpetual check. After 30...Qxf6, Black believes it's all over. But then comes the unique 31.Rh8+!, it is all over alright, but not, however, as Black had anticipated.
