Resignation - what does it mean to you?

Often, whenever you are about to win, or if checkmate is inevitable, your opponent somply resigns instead of playing the game out to its fullest extent. Why is this? Is it because they simply wish to save time, or is it to prove that they know that they cannot escape losing? What does it mean to you to resign?
