Spicing up your openings: Walbrodt-Baird Gambit

It is useful to have a few extra opening plans to add a little variety to your play. If you are a standard e4 player, there are many interesting gambits that lead to a sharp game. In this article I will show you an alternative to the Max Lange, which most players are prepared for.

The Walbordt-Baird Gambit 6.c3 is a valid gambit in its own right,and is not as well known as 6.e5.   It was first played by Walbrodt and Baird in the late 19th century. It was taken up by the great Rudolf Spielmann, who is featured in our game.
