Staunton Memorial Rd.4: Fight until you fall down!
The Staunton Memorial has no rules against short draws. The organizer invites only players who love a fight. Round 4 games showed this, as Wells-Short and Van Wely-Smeets battled until a split point was inevitable. The British players gained ground as Mickey Adams defeated Jan Timman and Jon Speelman beat L'Ami. Veteran Bob Wade got a good position against Cherniaev but let it slip with a blunder (...Ne6). Sokolov-Werle was a strange sort of game were White couldn't seem to decide which flank to play on.
