* 2004: Grand champion as 13-year-old
* 2006: For the first time ranked among the top 100 in the world
* 2007: As a 16-year-old, he beats worlds Veselin Topalov
* 2009: The youngest ever world champion in lightning chess
* 2010: 19 year old first ranked as worlds
* 2013: Reaches the highest-ranking score of all time with 2872 (a measure of relative playing power)
* 2013: Becomes first Norwegian world champion in chess with 6.5-3.5 against Viswanathan Anand in Chennai
* 2014: Become world champion in fast chess and light chess. Defends his World Cup title with 6.5-4.5 against Vishy Anand in Sochi
* 2015: Undisputed as the world's best chess game. Defends the World Cup title in fast chess.
* 2016: Defends its World Cup title for the second time with victory in the replay of Russian Sergey Karjakin in New York
* 2017: Become world champion in lightning chess for the third time
* 2018: Has been worlds for over seven years in a row. Defends his World Cup title in classic chess against Fabiano Caruana, also this time after a replay. In December he also supports the World Cup title in lightning chess.
* 2019: Winner Shamkir Chess, the Grenke tournament in Baden-Baden, Norway Chess and the Grand Chess Tour tournaments in Ivory Coast and India. Will be number two in the Fischersjakk World Cup.
