I am a retired petty officer of the Philippine Coast Guard. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation (BSMT) in 1993-94 at the Philippine Maritime Institute Bohol. I learned to play basic chess moves from a friend and a neighbour when I was in grade school were chess was played in every street corners never gotten serious about chess not until rediscovered my interest from watching my class instructor play blitz with clock I was blowned away on how the way they play so fast and seems all their moves for me doesn’t make any sense at that time, I was amazed that they barely think about each moves and started to get curious and sparked interested in me watching him play, until he noticed me that I always went around looking for him around the premises to watched him play against a senior student who was at that time a chess champion represented our school, Until one day my Instructor offered to teach me the basic tactics, traps and principles like don’t moves pawns unnecessarily in the openings especially the queen, etc’s from there on I got hooked, he gave me tips on how to improve my game, I spent my spare time reading chess books, no internet at that time, getting a chess materials to study was difficult, when most chess players at that time barely had enough money much less buy books , I rarely get any reading materials and chess books so expensive for a regular chess players, all I get was a photocopy from a different old chess books I can get from a friend to a friend’s friend, then photocopy it again almost unreadable at time much of which is an opening book Encyclopaedia of Chess Openings, I started joining local chess club and at the same time I saved up on my first real chess book I bought from national bookstore was the Fischer vs Spassky 1972 World Chess Championship Match which I find it difficult to learn since it barely has any explanations on that book kind of useless for me, my second book was gaven to as a gift from a girlfriend abroad Chess the Easy Way by Ruben Fine, it was definitely the best book that I had at that time which helps me improve and started winning against friends, and the third time I bought 2 books The 1000 Best Short Games of Chess and the Logical Chess Move by Move, this was the most instructive chess best books I read at that time which greatly help me in improving my games . Now, I have been collecting over a hundred books and magazines (Chess Asia and Inside Chess) over the years. I still consider myself an intermediate player; it's been almost 20 years since my last game played. When I was working, I barely had any opponents to play over the board, and studying chess was a bit difficult because work and family life were on my constant radar at that time. Now that I am already retired and off work, I am glad to get back at this game, I play fair and square; there’s no point in cheating. If I am losing, I will make sure I will learn from it as much as I am winning from an old folk like myself who is trying to pick my game up.
